Head of Design

Overview

NJR have been retained to recruit a Head of Design role to support the continued growth of this ambitious specialist SME manufacturer based in the North-East of England, close to York. The company place real importance on the design function and there’s a team of three to manage, support, mentor and develop.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the General Manager, the focus of this role is successfully leading on design, working collaboratively as an integral part of the senior management team and delivering product and new product development on time and to budget. You’ll do so with gravitas as a suitably qualified engineering professional and will happily remain hands-on as a CAD operator, leading from the front.

The business has plans to double in size in the next five years and perhaps significantly overachieve on this goal – their sector specialism is certainly hot at present and the customer base is available to deliver this.

Amongst other things, you’ll be responsible for

  • Management and direction of the engineering department
  • Internal and external CAD resource management and department budget
  • Preparation and implementation of annual CAD department improvement plans
  • Ensuring product and process quality meets required specification and complies with quality standards (e.g. ISO 9001)
  • Ensuring all supporting manufacturing information is provided in a timely manner
  • Ensuring all MRP/System requirements are completed effectively
  • Involvement with clients as required

The Person

 To be successful you’ll likely:

  • Have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and perhaps be a Chartered Engineer
  • Be an accomplished CAD operator who wants to lead a high-quality design function
  • Have experience in component manufacturing businesses as opposed to OEMs
  • Be comfortable and enjoy being a key figure in a growing SME business
  • Have MRP/Systems knowledge and experience
  • Be an accomplished people manager and very much a team player
  • Be a proactive forward thinker; tenacious with a “getting the job done” mentality
  • Be open to the potential of UK & Overseas travel if required

 Remuneration

Attractive remuneration commensurate with experience is available for a talented individual
